Manfred James Müller, Jasmin Seiberl, Sandra Plachta-Danielzik, Kiel, Marco Franze, Wolfgang Hoffmann, Christian H. Splieth, Greifswald

Objectives: Estimation of children’s school breakfast according to the recommendations of the German Association for Nutrition and the Research Institute of Child Nutrition and identification of its determinants.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of 601 fifth grade children (10.8 ± 0.48 years) in the study region Greifswald/East Pomerania. Analysis of food choice and determinants (sex, weight status of child and mother, socioeconomic status).

Results: 93.5 % had an SB and 89.7 % took beverages for school. The SBs for 34.6 % of the children were “appropriate”, whereas the SBs of 44.2% were “satisfactory” and 21.2 % of children had an “inappropriate” SB. In most cases, beverages were “appropriate” (75.6 %). However 6.3 % had “satisfactory” and 18.2 % had “inappropriate” beverages. Girls more frequently had “appropriate” SBs than boys.

Conclusions: The SBs of many children were not in accordance with the recommendations. Gender-specific intervention strategies are necessary.

Keywords: Primary prevention, school, school breakfast, beverages, nutritional education, gender.
