Osteoporosis is a major public health issue. In Germany, one out of three women, respectively one out of five men, are affected. Generally, consequent osteoporosis prevention is very effective. Besides genetic disposition, the most important risk factors are chronic lack of physical activity and nutritional deficits.
Avoiding nutritional factors which negatively affect the bone metabolism on the one hand and a sufficient supply with calcium and vitamin D on the other hand are of importance for bone health. Consistent osteoporosis-prevention via a wellbalanced diet starts during pregnancy and lactation, continues into childhood and youth – simultaneously to bone growth – and prevents age-related bone atrophy in the elderly.
