In the present study the authors examined the nutritional situation of German top ballroom dancers as an example of high-performance athlethes in sports of less importance to the public. At a dancing competition in February 2000, questionnaires were distributed to 96 couples; 48 couples, i.e. 52 %, responded. In addition, the nutritional behaviour of 10 dancers was studied in greater detail a computer-aided diet-history method .The usual average training time per week was 9.5 hours; it increased to up to 11.9 hours at times preceding dancing contests. The mean BMI was 20.1 in women and 21.5 in men. At times of the usual training and at times before and during contests the dancers’ nutritional situation was in need of improvement. Their nutritional problems were comparable to those usually found in populations adhering to a Western style diet (ratio of carbohydrates:fat intake; fat quality; alcohol, etc.) This can be assumed to be typical of the nutritional situation of athletes in many sports which are not the focal point of public interest.
