Part 3: Into the new millennium, conclusion and prospects B. Gassmann, Nuthetal
After half a century passed in review, the list of subjects treated is more or less the same: nutritional recommendations and behaviour, nutritional situation, obesity and its causes, bioactive food components, other food components and additives, nutrition and the process of aging, the nutrition of specific groups of the population, dietetics, food knowledge, food law and food safety. Those going through the chronology of essential scientific papers may get the impression that the nutritional approaches move in a circle, as do the preventive or therapeutic measures attempting to influence lifestyle and the nutritional behaviour in particular. However, this circular motion, in fact an upward spiral motion, has continuously increased our knowledge and has led to insights into nutritional metabolic processes extending into subcellular structures and molecular dimensions. In the presence of an overabundance of information, Ernährungs-Umschau as German-speaking organ of practice-oriented nutritional science has always done a perfect job in conveying scientifically based knowledge and recommendations, and in strictly separating it from false and non-verified messages, to the benefit of the healthy and the sick. However, a reflection of what exists and of what has been done also demonstrates the need for new visionary approaches in nutritional research, science and practice.
