Media, Materials and the Role of Teachers
Ines Heindl, Ulrike Johannsen, Flensburg, Ingrid Brüggemann, Bonn
Children require people to teach them the knowledge, abilities and skills needed to become familiar with food and to develop nutritional expertise. Teachers, specialists and others exploit innumerable media and materials and may be anything between genuine experts and simple laymen.
They frequently have recourse to teaching models to visualise nutritional recommendations. The present article starts with an evaluation of the “aid nutritional pyramid” for children , as used in elementary schools. It is investigated whether elementary schoolchildren understand the central messages, as well as how the teachers see the benefit and use of the teaching model and the supporting material. Conclusions are drawn about the quality and use of media and materials and the necessity of training specialists and teachers, as well as considering the link between learning by children and the process of social development.
