In 2001, the German market comprised 244 food products for children and 64 for toddlers. This is three times the supply of 1997. The product range includes sweets and pastry , convenience food (23 %), cereal products (15 %), dairy products (14 %) and drinks (12 %). In total, 93 % of products for children were sweetened. 66 % of the food products intended for toddlers were ready-to-serve menus, in fact a kind of baby food.40 % of all products were fortified with vitamins and/or minerals at varying concentrations. If the product showing utmost fortification in its product group is consumed daily, the reference values for nutrient intake would be largely exceeded (except for iron). Internet presentation has gained in importance. 66 % of the manufacturers of food for children are present, 50 % of the websites are designed for children. Competent and independent nutrition education and counselling could help to inform parents and children about the role of children’s food in a healthy diet for children. EU01/03
