Based on an individualized human image, the author presents useful aspects to be taken into account in dietary counselling. It should be kept in mind that many individuals are not able to regard food intake under nutritional aspects and that eating is part of a complex psychosocial system from which it cannot be separated.
It is often difficult, therefore, to impart scientific nutrition-related knowledge if these complex connections are neglected. For a trustful relation, a non-judging attitude of the adviser towards the advised, scientifically based information, truthfulness, and avoidance of attempts to manipulate are essential. These principles are part of the human image of the Empowerment. It is important, furthermore, to understand the patient’s life, his motives and his idea of advice and change. For the adviser, active listening, open questions and repeated asking for feed-back reactions are essential.
Keywords: individualized human image, nutritional behaviour, counselling, conversation during the consultation, Empowerment.
