The metabolic syndrome is characterized by obesity, hypertension, dyslipoproteinemia and disturbed glucose tolerance. Diseases associated with the metabolic syndrome such as arteriosclerosis and diabetes mellitus type II put the German health system to great expense. In the present contribution it is hypothesized that inadequate vitamin D supply in combination with a low dietary calcium intake are factors promoting the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome. Especially dark-skinned people living in the north, obese and aged persons are at risk of inadequate vitamin D supply and of the metabolic syndrome. Epidemiological data and first intervention trials confirm a correlation between low vitamin D status and occurrence of the metabolic syndrome. EU03/03
